East Sussex firefighters reach out after a spate of 'deliberate' bin fires in Eastbourne

East Sussex firefighters are investigating possible arson after crews attended eight separate incidents in Eastbourne overnight (Tuesday, 7). Officers believe the seven bin fires, along with a skip fire, were set deliberately. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is urging the public to consider the impact that arson has on the community and local resources. A spokesperson for the service said: "Arson and deliberate fires are a serious problem for the Fire Service, the Police and the Ambulance Service. "They endanger lives and divert valuable resources. "Arson is a criminal offence that can lead to loss of life and injury.  "It can damage property and have a negative effect on the environment." Officials added the progressive escalation that is often seen with arsonists: "Arson often starts with a fascination for fire and progresses to lighting small fires but this can quickly escalate onto skips, cars, derelict properties and most disturbingly people's homes." In 2019 East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service attended 742 fires which were deliberately started. Practical advice on how to combat arson can be found on the ESFRS website.
