Councillors in Eastbourne have been asked to consult on a new Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) that will give police the power to tackle anti-social driving.
The PSPO could be put in place by this summer (2022) as police and councillors want to make a quick crackdown on Eastbourne's anti-social driving hot spots.
Dangerous and aggressive driving, speeding, illegal manoeuvres, racing and excess noise from vehicles seriously impacts on the quality of life for residents living adjacent to areas and roads where the activity takes place.
Fixed penalty notices of up to £100 or fines up to £1,000 could result for any driver failing to comply with the new PSPO
Councillor Rebecca Whippy, Cabinet Member for Disabilities & Community Safety, said:
“This has been a growing issue of local concern for residents and policing teams for some time and so I’m pleased we are bringing this PSPO forward to crack down on irresponsible and often dangerous driving in the town.
"Sussex Police has been very clear about its need for new powers to tackle this problem and with 425 reports of anti-social driving since November 2021 alone, I look forward to police teams being able to use these to help boost the enforcement options they have at their disposal.”
Under the proposals roads covered by the new PSPO would include: Beachy Head Road; Prince William Parade; Royal Parade; Marine Parade; Grand Parade; King Edwards Parade; Dukes Drive; Upper Dukes Drive; Warren Hill; stretches of East Dean Road; Seaside; Seaside Road; Lottbridge Drove.
Councillor Whippy added:
“We will get to work on the consultation quickly and subject to that process I hope the PSPO will be in force from summer 2022.
“I want to make clear, I don’t have a problem with young people enjoying their cars, but I do when their behaviour becomes a real menace for our residents.”
