Eastbourne Golf Course To Host Qualifying Rounds For Junior European Open

Eastbourne Downs Golf Course will host qualifying rounds for a prestigious European golf competition next year.

The venue, owned and operated by Eastbourne Borough Council, has been chosen to stage two qualifiers for the Junior European Open in May and September – the only ones in Sussex.

The Junior European Open, first staged in 1993 and now in its 31st year, is widely considered as the toughest test in junior golf across Europe.

The competition is open to all junior golfers in the UK, Europe and beyond, born after January 1st 2005 for boys and January 1st 2004 for girls.

Some 45 regional finals take place at venues throughout the year across the UK and Europe from March until October, with the champions week finals taking place in November in Spain, played over five rounds, and televised on Sky Sports Golf.

For the first time, two qualifiers are being held at the Eastbourne Downs Golf Course in East Dean Road, the first on Sunday, May 7 and the second on Sunday, September 3, the only ones to take place in Sussex.

Councillor Margaret Bannister, Eastbourne Borough Council’s Lead Member for Tourism & Culture, said:

"This is a hole in one for Eastbourne Downs Golf Course to have been chosen to host the qualifying rounds.

“With its breathtaking views, friendly welcome and stunning 18-hole course, the competitors are in for a treat as they compete in this prestigious competition.”

Eastbourne Downs Golf Course has gained a reputation for its friendly and welcoming hospitality and work has been underway on creating hybrid greens amongst the naturally free draining soil, which means the greens are more playable than most courses as they are less affected by bad weather.

Adult and junior memberships are available, with coaching available from the club professional.

The clubhouse is open to the public serving breakfasts, light lunches, and afternoon tea.
