The volunteer lifeboat crew at Eastbourne's RNLI station have rescued three people from a burning yacht.

Members were paged at 4.15pm on Wednesday (August 11), with a request to launch the All Weather Lifeboat and the Inshore Lifeboat.

The lifeboats travelled to the location of a 12-metre motor cruiser near the Sovereign Light Tower, that had put out a 'mayday' because of a fire on board.

When the Inshore Lifeboat arrived, volunteer crew member Pete Needham was transferred onto the casualty vessel to help manage the on-board situation.

The three persons onboard the casualty vessel were taken off the vessel by the Inshore Lifeboat and transferred to the All Weather Lifeboat.

The casualty vessel was then towed back by the All Weather Lifeboat into the safety of Sovereign Harbour where they were met by the Fire Service and local Coastguards.

But this was only the first of three call-outs Eastbourne's RNLI team reported on Wednesday.

At 7pm, they were paged again, to assist a 9 Metre yacht that had suffered mechanical failure in the Cooden Beach area.

The All Weather Lifeboat went to assist the yacht due to the danger of running aground in the falling tide.

The casualty was towed safely back into Sovereign Harbour.

Meanwhile, the Inshore Lifeboat was sent to assist with a broken down jet ski.

The volunteer crew was quickly on scene and helped bring the jet ski safely back ashore.
