Eastbourne Widows Launch Dementia Support Group For Carers

A group of carers and former carers, who's partners were diagnosed with dementia has opened up a support group.

Retiree Susan Parsons is leading the group, called the Eastbourne, Dementia Support Group, which can be found on Facebook.

The Alzheimer's Society used to meet at Milton Grange but since funding was withdrawn, volunteers have taken matters into their own hands.

Susan said support groups were helpful for her when her husband diagnosed "and it was useful to be around people the same as her".

Her group will provide information for the following:

  • Where to go
  • Information on carers cards
  • Information council tax rebates
  • Share experiences
  • Gain knowledge from other carers

Speaking exclusively to More Radio, lead volunteers Sue said:

"We aimed to start in Janurary, new year new meeting place, for anyone who cares for someone with dementia. All we do is offer somewhere for carers to come to let off steam, to laugh to cry, we've had it all. To have a cup of tea and a biscuit.

"When my husband Peter was first diagnosed, we used to go to various groups and you met people who had newly diagnosed, but because those groups are not meeting - people who are being diagnosed with dementia are not being picked up by the carers groups, so I just wanted to let everyone what we are doing".

The group meet monthly usually on the 2nd Monday of each month in Eastbourne's Ivy Health Dementia Centre,

The meeting room and building are both "covid secure" and volunteer groups, that cannot meet in person ARE able to meet - despite the lockdown.

People need to sign up in advance because of the current COVID restrictions 15 people are allowed to attend.

The group focuses on those in the Eastbourne, Hailsham and Polegate areas.
