Emergency services were called to West Worthing railway station last night (Thursday), after receiving a report of a fire on a train.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service received the emergency call at 11.54pm, and mobilised three appliances and the heavy rescue tender from Worthing Fire Station to the incident.
Crews used hose reel jets and high pressure fire extinguishers to extinguish the blaze.
A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said:
“Joint Fire Control received a call to a reported fire on a passenger train at West Worthing railway station at 11.54pm on Thursday 19 November.
“Three appliances and the heavy rescue tender were mobilised from Worthing Fire Station to the incident. The on scene commander liaised with trackside rail staff and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using Co2 extinguishers and high pressure hose reel jets.
“The incident was handed over to Southern for recovery of the train.”
A Southern Railway spokesperson said:
“Late last night, at around 11.40pm, the driver of an empty train that was out of service and due to head to the sidings, reported there was a fire underneath his train in West Worthing platform.
"Firefighters put out the flames, however the train was damaged and will need to be repaired before it can return to service.
"To ensure everyone's safety, the power supply to the line was isolated during the incident which would have delayed some passengers. Anyone held up for 15 minutes or more can claim compensation via our website stourhernrailway.com."
