Excavation Starts In Eastbourne Next To 11th Century Priory

Archeaologists and volunteers will start excavating a piece of land in Eastbourne that could uncover secrets from the 11th century.

The land is next to Eastbourne's oldest building, Langney Priory in Etchingham Road, and is about to become a community garden.

A geological survey has identified possible structures, which could tell us a huge amount about the priory.

The priory itself was actually a Grange or monastic farm and is a Grade II listed building.

In collaboration with Friends of the Earth and St Anthony's ward members from Eastbourne Borough Council, the project will involve archaeologists and volunteers excavating a number of areas of interest on the Triangle.

Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Tourism and Culture Councillor Margaret Bannister said:

"Langney Priory was built before 1121 and is a Grade II* listed building but is one of Eastbourne's best-kept secrets, with many residents in the town unaware of its existence.

"This is going to be a very exciting project and we are very much looking forward to hopefully gaining further insight into this fascinating part of Eastbourne's past.

"Visitors are welcome to pop along to watch the team in action and learn more about the latest discoveries as they happen."

Regular updates will also be shared via Heritage Eastbourne's social media channels and website so history enthusiasts can keep up with the latest news.
