Festivals And Events In Sussex This Weekend: What's On And What's Cancelled

A major event has been cancelled in Brighton this weekend, to respect a period of national mourning. following the Queen's death last week.

  • Pub in the Park, which was to be held at Preston Park from Friday to Sunday this weekend has now been cancelled. Organisers say they've rescheduled the event for May 5-7 of next year. They said:

We don’t wish to promote and stage an event next weekend during a period of national mourning and in the days leading up to the funeral. We would prefer to give all involved time and space to grieve as they wish.

  • The Mayor's Charity Seafront Walk 2022, which was scheduled for this Sunday18th in Eastbourne, has been postponed until after her funeral. A date hasn't yet been set.
  • The Hastings Seafood and Wine festival WILL go ahead this weekend at the Stade open space in Hastings Old Town. They said:

One minute’s silence to mark the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth the Second will be held before the start of each day’s music performance and cookery demonstrations, and a condolence book will be available to sign throughout the festival. 

  • A protest march was due to take place in Chichester this weekend, against the rising cost of social care for people with disabilities. It will now take place next Friday, September 23rd, at 9am from Market Cross towards County Hall. 
  • A number of shops and major supermarkets have shops also announced complete closure on the day of the funeral:

Aldi, Lidl, Sainsburys, Waitrose, Poundland and Primark will all close for the day. As will McDonalds, Greggs, Argos, Zara, Halfords, Next, and Apple. Tesco will close its bigger stores, with Express stores opening from 5pm. Most shopping centres will open, although retailers inside will close at their own discretion.

In Brighton, the i360 will be closed for the day as will the Royal Pavilion. All the cinemas will also be closed - Cineworld, The Duke of York's and Odeon.

Government guidelines have stated that businesses are not under obligation to close for the day, but may do so at their own discretion.
