Fire Crews Working Through The Night To Tackle Blaze At Royal Albion Hotel In Brighton

A fire has continued to blaze through the night at a hotel in Brighton.

The first broke out at the Royal Albion Hotel shortly after 5pm yesterday (Saturday, July 15) with emergency services urging people to avoid the area.

East Sussex fire and rescue service (ESFR) attended the scene on the seafront a short time later.

An update from ESFR at 11pm on Saturday said the following:

"High winds are creating difficult conditions for fire crews and firefighters are expected to continue dealing with the fire through the night.

"As a precaution East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service working alongside Sussex Police have evacuated surrounding buildings.

"We are aware of significant smoke in the area which is being made worse by wind. We strongly advise you to avoid the area.

"There are no reports of casualties at this time."

People had earlier been instructed to stay away from the area around the Old Steine thoroughfare in the city, with nearby residents told to keep windows shut as smoke billowed out of the third floor, from which the fire is reported to have started.

Buses were re-directed away from the Old Steine and most of North Street was cordoned off with police barricades directing all traffic away from the area.

A total of 15 appliance attended the scene, with crews using a High Volume Pump and three Ariel Ladder Platforms.

An Incident Command Centre was subsequently set up at the scene.
