It took until just after 6am this morning for firefighters to announce that they were finally damping down the scene to extinguish any 'hot spots'.
In a statement, East Sussex Fire & Rescue confirmed that there had been no injuries during the incident but that the building had been seriously affected.
They have thanked residents for their patience and added that the cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed.
Police in Hastings say, for safety reasons, the steps leading from the West Hill to George Street are currently closed off to the public.
