Firefighters Tackle Huge Blaze In Hastings' George Street

Multiple fire crews have been working since just after 7pm last night (Jan 18) to extinguish a huge blaze at a nightclub in George Street in the Old Town.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue say they were called to at 7.17pm to, what eye witnesses say, was Saturday's Night Club. At that time, eight pumps were in attendance as well as Sussex Police.

A Twitter user "@wozname" uploaded a video to the social media platform:

At 8.42pm, ESFRS tweeted again to say that ten pumps were now working on the fire and crew were using breathing apparatus.

Tweeting at 9.09pm, they asked Hastings residents to avoid the area.

Then at 9.27pm:

It took until just after 6am this morning for firefighters to announce that they were finally damping down the scene to extinguish any 'hot spots'.

In a statement, East Sussex Fire & Rescue confirmed that there had been no injuries during the incident but that the building had been seriously affected.

They have thanked residents for their patience and added that the cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed.

Police in Hastings say, for safety reasons, the steps leading from the West Hill to George Street are currently closed off to the public.
