Firefighters Continue To Tackle Blaze At Brighton Seafront Hotel

Firefighters tackling a blaze at Brighton's Royal Albion Hotel, which started at around 5.30pm on Saturday afternoon (July 15) are still on the scene today (Sunday 16).

Brighton seafront from the Palace Pier roundabout to East Street is still cordoned off, with traffic and buses diverted.

Fire could still be seen raging from a third floor window, with the sky visible through upper windows, suggesting that most of the inside of the building had burned out with only the facade remaining.

Onlookers watched as the wind blew the fire out of the window and embers and parts of the building's structure came away inside.

High winds on the seafront today and yesterday have hampered efforts by East Sussex Fire and Rescue to extinguish the flames.

Smoke could still be seen billowing from the top of the building at 5pm this afternoon (Sunday 16) while the air up in Kemp Town and hundreds of metres away from the scene appeared smokey.

Updates to follow.
