Firefighters help rescuers save ducklings stuck in Uckfield chimney

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service helped the county's Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service retrieve some ducklings in Uckfield on Monday (May, 4). The WRAS received reports of a duck who had nested in a false chimney in Old Common Way. Residents had begun to hear cheeping coming from a chimney, indicating that the mother's ducklings had fallen down and were unable to get out. Mum was flying back and forth from a neighbouring pond and the chimney, appearing to become increasingly frustrated.

On the rescuers arrival, it was assessed that they would not be able to gain access, so they put in a call to ESFRS.

Firefighters discovered two, very small, messy ducklings, as well as two deceased ducklings and six eggs that were very cold, and had not hatched.

A decision was made to bring the two survivors into care, as their condition was too poor for them to survive on the pond.

The WRAS said there is still time for mum to re-nest and have more young.
