Here's Rex! — after firefighters sprung him from a car when his horrified owners realised they'd accidentally locked him inside, with the vehicle parked near Kirdford.

A crew from Billingshurst heard of beagle Rex's owners' frightening situation when they had a call from the Joint Fire Control centre around 10am today (July 24).

According to West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, firefighters arrived in Glasshouse Lane near the village to learn what had happened.

A spokesperson for the service said:

"Speaking to his owners, crew members found they had accidentally left their car keys in the boot of the vehicle, when letting Rex back inside after walkies.

"They had then closed the boot behind him — but, with the keys still inside, the vehicle automatically locked itself shut."

But the photographs tell their own story about what happened next.

"Using small tools", the spokesperson said, "we were able to get into the vehicle."

"Rex was then finally reunited with his owners."
