Firefighters have been tackling flames this morning (Monday, 10) at a school in Lewes that's been disused for nearly 13 years. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said four engines attended the former St. Anne's School after the alarm was raised at 11.30am. As of mid-day, no injuries have been reported. The derelict property, on land behind County Hall in the town, closed as a special school in 2007, and has been gradually falling into disrepair since that date. Several attempts to re-use the site across the intervening years, some controversial, have failed. It was also occupied by protesters in 2011 who wanted to ensure the site would be retained for community use, and not sold for housing.
