Flooding hits Sussex just days before Christmas

Heavy rain saw flooding in several parts of Sussex over the weekend. The Cuckmere River over-topped at both Hellingly and Alfriston, causing flooding in the villages. In Alfriston, several roads remain closed and many cars have been left trapped in the floodwater. Businesses remain open, but access to the village is only possible from the Seaford end. Elsewhere, a councillor took to twitter to ask for help for householders in Denton Road in Newhaven, who found their homes flooded. Councillor Sean Macleod asked for anyone with spare pumps to come forward to help get water out of properties. In Bognor, roads were left underwater and the Tesco car park was also badly affected with several inches of water gathering, but the supermarket itself, remained open. Many on social media described fields as looking like lakes. The Campaign to Protect Rural England has also raised concerns after two sites between Henfield and Wineham and in Pagham, which are being proposed for development were submerged by the flooding. Firefighters are again reminding motorists not to attempt to drive through any floodwater, as they may get stuck. At least two drivers had to be rescued in West Sussex over the weekend. Sussex Police have revealed that between a minute passed midnight on Thursday (19 December) and Saturday morning (21 December), they received 221 calls relating to crashes – many of which were weather related. The Environment Agency has several flood alerts and warnings in force this morning and more heavy rain is expected to hit Sussex overnight.
