Flooding hits Sussex on one of the busiest travel days before Christmas

Sussex remains on a severe weather warning for rain today (20 December), with flooding reported in several areas. On what’s expected to be one of the busiest days for travel in the run up to Christmas, flooding is  hindering the roads and railways across the county. Police have closed the M23 in both directions this morning between J10 A264 Copthorne Way (Crawley) and J11 A23 (Pease Pottage), because of flooding around J10A, which is causing queuing traffic. Firefighters are urging motorists not to attempt to drive through any flood water they encounter, warning it can be dangerous. At least two drivers had to be rescued from flood water in West Sussex yesterday (19 December). Elsewhere on the trains, Southern Rail is urging people to delay journeys until later on, if possible. They've warned that no trains are running between Haywards Heath and Three Bridges at this time, with the Balcombe area currently flooded. Services between Brighton and Haywards Heath are also affected, although the company is trying to get some trains through. On the Oxted to Uckfield line, flooding has been reported at Hever and Crowborough. Southern has confirmed they will run services to and from Crowborough, but say Buxted and Uckfield won’t be served. Meanwhile, there are several flood alerts and more serious flood warnings in force from the Environment Agency, who are monitoring the county’s rivers and streams closely, especially as more bad weather is due to arrive. You can see if your area is on an alert through their interactive map.   More Radio is continuously dedicated to providing a quality news service on-air and online, reporting local stories that matter across Sussex.
