Free Community Event In Eastbourne In Celebration Of Lottery Funding

Cooking on a Budget, run by Community Stuff at Age Concern.

A free event for Eastbourne residents will be held this Saturday (September 16) to celebrate the good work achieved with lottery funding.

Ten years ago, Devonshire West Big Local was given a million pounds of lottery money to improve the quality of life of the residents of
Devonshire West Ward in Eastbourne.

The money came to an end this year and to celebrate their achievements the group is holding a community celebration - 'Devonshire West Fest' - at Leaf Hall, Seaside, Eastbourne, this Saturday (16).

The group hopes as many will come to the event as possible, so they can show residents what has been achieved, through demonstrations, personal stories and posters.

There will also be art, drama and music demonstrations from those people the group has sponsored, face painting and activities for children and food and drink and other activities.

A spokesperson for Devonshire West Big Local told us:

"The board members of Devonshire West Big Local have worked tirelessly over the last ten years, investing a million pounds in the Devonshire West area of Eastbourne.

"During the difficult times of the last 10 years we have tried to help as much as we could with provision of food during Covid and helping vulnerable and financially deprived people.

"We have invested in the formulation of the Devonshire Collective, improvements to The Royal Hippodrome, play equipment at Seaside Recreation Ground, free summer play schemes, a variety of free activities for all ages, salaries of key workers at Matthew 25 Mission, disabled WC facilities at Leaf Hall, free sessions for young people with Audio Active, and much more."

"It is being held at Leaf Hall as we have invested in its future as a community centre for Devonshire West area. It was originally built as a
community centre for the residents and we want to ensure its future as a beautiful and well presented venue for local events."

Celebrations will officially commence at 12 noon when the Mayor of Eastbourne opens the event, at which point Leaf Hall Road will be closed and filled with free activities for everyone to enjoy.

Indoors will be a free café, a display of the work of DWBL in the Library and, throughout the building, an exhibition of local artist and Chair of DWBL, Clare Hackney-Ring’s paintings, focusing on the history of Eastbourne’s fishing families.

Upstairs there will be displays, performances and free workshops for all ages and Audio Active will bring the day to a close, entertaining from 5.15p.m. to 8 p.m.
