Free Hot Drink Offer Helps Keep Sussex Countryside Free Of Litter

Volunteer litter pickers are being offered free hot refreshments to encourage them to dispose of rubbish found while walking on the South Downs around Seaford.

Brewster’s Coffee Co, based at South Hill Barn in Seaford, successfully bid for funds for litter picking equipment from Lewes and Eastbourne Community Safety Partnership recently.

The drinks and snacks outlet is now offering a free tea, hot chocolate or Americano every ‘Free Tea Thursday’ to anyone who borrows a picker to use during their walk and disposes of the litter responsibility.

The idea is the brainchild of Brewster’s owner Jon Younghusband and has resulted in litter picking equipment being donated to a number of community litter picking groups and champions.

Councillor Julie Carr, Lewes District Council Cabinet member for Recycling, Waste and Open Spaces and Councillor Christine Brett, Seaford ward councillor and Council Chair, delivered the equipment to Jon at Brewster’s last week accompanied by Neil Peters, Environment First Community Recycling Engagement Officer.

They seized the opportunity to become the first to use the new equipment on a litter pick.

Councillor Brett said:

“South Hill Barn has become far more popular with visitors since the start of the pandemic and an initiative like this gives them pause for thought on the impact some people are having on the environment. This is a fun way to keep this unique area of outstanding natural beauty clean and pleasant for all to enjoy."

Councillor Carr added: “It was a pleasure to meet Jon from Brewster's Coffee Company at South Hill Barn and to support his litter picking initiative by providing some litter picking equipment. I for one will certainly be calling by some Thursdays to participate and help to keep the area clean and free from litter, plus to sample his wonderful coffee and cakes! Thank you Jon."
