Further Heavy Weather Due In Sussex, Official Warning Says

The FOURTH official weather warning within a week is active across all Sussex this morning, with possible wind gusts of up to 70mph predicted in exposed places.

The Met Office's warning is in the yellow category, meaning residents and businesses should check if the conditions are likely to affect them, and to be prepared.

Other forecasts also show further heavy rain is due to fall on Sussex, on top of saturated ground conditions meaning drainage is already compromised.

However, north of Sussex, including greater London, had its own weather warning upgraded to amber at 9am today, meaning an increased likelihood of injury, disruption to plans and damage to property.

In detail, Britain's official forecasters said on Monday:

"Very windy conditions are likely to spread eastwards across southern and some central parts of England from Tuesday (2nd January) morning.

"In coastal areas winds are likely to gust towards 60 mph at times, with a lower likelihood of 70 mph gusts.

"Inland gusts of 40 to 50 mph are likely but with a smaller chance of 55 to 60 mph gusts, although the extent of such gusts carries low confidence at present.

"This windy weather will be accompanied by heavy rain in places, covered by a separate warning.

"Winds will start to ease from the west during the afternoon and evening."

However, by 6.30am on Tuesday morning, Sussex already had a total of 15 flood warnings in place, all along river or stream courses that regularly burst their banks after inclement weather.

These include the River Uck around Uckfield and, to its west, the upper Ouse, along with the Cuckmere River through Alfriston.

Predictions for heavy rain in Sussex mean that already soaked ground will not be able to take more rainwater, so surface water will spread more than usual, leading to difficult walking and driving conditions in many areas.

From weather data collected at midnight, see below for predictions of heavy rain and high winds.
