Gatwick Airport included in flood alert with nearby residents told to take 'immediate action'

The western part of Gatwick Airport including the end of its runway has received an official flood alert this morning (Tuesday 24 September). Environment Agency staff said three nearby watercourses on the border between West Sussex and Surrey are expected to overflow. They believe the danger comes from the Ifield Brook, the River Mole and Ifield, and the Rover Mole and Lowfield Heath. Residents in nearby properties in Rusper Road and Hyde Drive have been told to take "immediate action". The heavy rainfall has also made flooding likely to other pieces of low-lying land. A map has been issued, showing in red the areas where action is thought to be required. An agency spokesperson said: "Residents and businesses should take action in our areas of concern, moving possessions from the ground and avoiding contact with flood water. "We have our staff responding in the area to clear river blockages and reduce water levels around Ifield. "Our incident room is open and managing the situation."
