Gatwick: Operations To Increase - But Safely

Gatwick Airport staff are preparing to reopen the North Terminal to accommodate rising numbers of flights, starting on June 15.

But the organisation must also bring in many protective measures against Covid-19 to help keep passengers and workers safe.

The principal changes visitors will notice are:

  • Everyone travelling through the airport must wear a face covering;
  • Hand sanitiser stations, protective screens, regular deep cleaning and social distancing measures will be in place throughout the airport;
  • Operating hours will increase to between 6am and 10pm;
  • North Terminal flights will resume, with planes in use from easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Belevia, Vueling and Blue Island.

The airport also added that, for travellers needing them, vending machines selling face-masks will be available inside the public buildings.

Specialist cleaning crews will be working, to perform what Gatwick called "frequent, enhanced deep cleaning of common-use surfaces throughout the airport".

Dedicated teams will also be ready to respond to any passenger concerns on cleanliness.

Bosses added they'd introduce social distancing procedures at check in, security, gate rooms, seating in departure halls and in restaurants, bars and shops.

There will also be Perspex screens throughout the terminals, including check in desks, and gate rooms.

Stewart Wingate, Chief Executive, Gatwick Airport, said:

"Having remained open throughout this pandemic the wellbeing and safety of our passengers and everyone that works at the airport remains our top priority.

"We have introduced a range of new social distancing and hygiene solutions to help this happen so we can all help protect each other when travelling through the airport.

"We want people to understand that airports and air travel is a safe environment in this COVID-19 travelling world.

"We are pleased to be in a position to re-open the North Terminal and we look forward to welcoming back easyJet as they restart flights alongside our other airlines."
