“Give Our Verges Time To Grow, Flower And Seed” Says Lewes Community Group

A community group which encourages wildflower habitat throughout Lewes is calling for a change to the town’s urban verge cutting regime.

In statement on Facebook, organisers of Wildflower Lewes described the current cutting schedule in June/July as the worst time of year for the work, when verges need the summer to grow, flower and seed to be able to flourish:

“We are in a biodiversity crisis – now is the time to harness every green space we can to create wildlife havens that support invertebrates and nature we can enjoy on our doorstep.”

In a letter sent by East Sussex County Council Highways, it states:

"Please note, our contractor will not cut a verge if it has visible wild flowers on it, however, if it is not a listed wildlife verge and there are not any visible flowers on it, they would carry out the cut as usual."

Organisers are calling for local support – asking Lewes residents to share the campaign poster and take photos of their local verge before the cutting begins on June 21.

Alternatively, people can email lewesvergecampaign@gmail.com with their name and message of support which will be posted on their behalf.

Campaign organisers say they recognise the need for cutting vital areas to ensure road safety visibility and that the cutting does not affect the specific verges Wildflower Lewes look after.
