Hastings Councillors To Discuss Relationship With Southern Water

Councillors will meet next Monday, October 2, to discuss a report made of several incidents involving Southern Water over the past two years.

It includes the burst main at Bulverhythe in summer 2021, the town centre flooding in January 2023 and the Old Roar Ghyll incidents this summer.

The council has been in contact with senior staff at SW on many occasions over the last two years in connection with the incidents mentioned, including with the current and past Chief Executive Officer.

This has included an open letter from the Leader of the Council to the CEO and a motion that was passed at Full Council in July 2022 for the council to hold SW to account.

Cllr Paul Barnett, leader of the council, said:

“Over the last few years there have been several serious incidents involving Southern Water which have caused considerable concern to our residents. Their response hasn’t been good enough.

“So we are committed to hold Southern Water to account, including their contribution to the flood report that East Sussex County Council are putting together, continuing to work with residents on misconnections and keeping us updated with plans for improvements to infrastructure.

"Officers across the council are working with colleagues within Southern Water and the Environment Agency on this, although it is challenging given that regulation of the water industry is the responsibility of other agencies."

Cllr John Cannan, chair of the charity committee, said:

“We are continuing to push Southern Water to improve their communications with residents, including working with our communications team to share relevant messages and updates around their work in Hastings.

"We are also talking to other councils to see if there is anything we can do working together to improve the relationships we all have with the water companies.”
