As recently as Friday evening, the team behind Hastings Old Town Carnival said the procession will still go ahead — despite Storm Antoni.
However, the organisation stated that the firework display, scheduled for tonight, cannot go ahead — a decision reportedly taken by the Borough Council in the interests of safety.
Describing their decision to proceed with the evening's carnival procession, the leaders' statement used an old Sussex phrase:
"The fireworks on Saturday are cancelled due to predicted poor weather.
"Council should have asked the bonfire society to do it instead of contracting out.
"All other events including carnival are going ahead because we wunt be druv by a bit of predicted weather.
"It should all be over by the time we start the procession."
Hastings Old Town Carnival begin in 1968, and is organised by groups of volunteers working together as the Old Hastings Preservation Society and the Hastings Old Town Carnival Association.
Their aim is to support a tranche of local charities while being proud of the historic Old Town and its community spirit.
Before the parade at 5pm, today's events are due to include a fancy dress competition at mid-day, and stage performances.
