A coastguard helicopter crew was among rescue teams that brought two people from the sea in an early-morning operation over the weekend in Brighton.

One man was found in the water close to Dukes Mound at 3.40am, but teams later found a second man nearby, at 4.30am.

Rescuers said this person was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

Commenting on Saturday morning's pre-dawn rescue near Brighton Palace Pier, a spokesperson for HM Coastguard said:

"Our service was called shortly after 3am on July 22, after reports that a man had gone into the sea from the Palace Pier at Brighton.

"An RNLI lifeboat from Brighton and HMCG’s coastal rescue teams from Newhaven and Shoreham joined officers from Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance to conduct a search.

"A man was found in the water near Dukes Mound at 3.40am and recovered to land safe and well.

"Further searches found a second man in the water nearby at around 4.30am. He was recovered safely and transferred to hospital by ambulance."

The RNLI team from Brighton confirmed their involvement to More Radio, and added:

"Please remember to stay safe near the water.

"Don’t drink and drown.”
