Police who spotted a speeding motorist in Eastbourne gave chase at up to 80mph before making an arrest on suspicion of having a cannabis farm, and driving offences.

According to Sussex Police, officers were doing speed checks in King Edward's Parade, Eastbourne, around 5.20pm on Thursday 17 June when they saw a BMW 1 Series travelling at 45mph in the 30mph zone.

A car chase began as the BMW sped at up to 80mph in Meads village.

But at this point, congestion meant the driver had to halt.

Police then said "the driver was removed from his car", and then failed a roadside drug test.

A search led to cannabis in the door pocket but officers also claimed to notice an "overwhelming" smell of the drug.

In carrying out a search warrant at his address in Pevensey, police subsequently discovered "a large quantity of cannabis throughout the house".

They arrested a 38-year-old on suspicion of drug-driving, possession of cannabis, cultivation of cannabis, speeding, failing to stop for police, and dangerous driving,

He has been interviewed and released under investigation, pending further enquiries.

Police added that the consequences of drink or drug-driving could include:

  • A minimum 12 month ban;
  • An unlimited fine;
  • A possible prison sentence;
  • A criminal record, which could affect your current and future employment;
  • An increase in your car insurance;
  • Trouble travelling to countries such as the USA;
  • A driver could also cause death or serious injury.

People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug-driving, or visit the Operation Crackdown website.

The independent charity Crimestoppers receives reports anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online.

Reports of a person driving over the limit or after taking drugs at the time are taken by the 999 emergency service.
