After shocked diners at an Indian restaurant in central Lewes witnessed a hit-and-run on the building itself, injuring four customers, police are anxious to trace the driver of a large silver vehicle involved. Officers say silver 4 x 4, believed to be an old style Land Rover Discovery, appeared to have lost control at about 8.10pm on Tuesday (31 December), before smashing into the front of Chaula's Restaurant in Eastgate Street. The vehicle broke the window, resulting in injuries to four diners inside. According to police, the vehicle then made off in a southerly direction, towards Friars Walk. Two of those injured were treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, for minor cuts — the other two did not require hospital treatment. PC Martyn Quick said: "We are investigating the circumstances of this collision and would like to hear from anyone who could identify the vehicle or the driver. Please get in touch with us if you can help." Sussex Police invite witness reports by email to collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or by calling 101 quoting serial 1291 of 31/12.
