A clinical oncologist from Hove is in training for a solo swim across the English Channel, which will raise money for a pair of charities helping patients throughout Sussex.

Joanna Stokoe claimed she isn't a "sporty person", but enjoys being in the water.

She told fundraisers her reasons are based around observing the benefit for her patients she's seen the Sussex Cancer Trust bring, together with the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Jo said:

"In my work as a clinical oncologist, these charities provide support to patients during a very difficult time and I am grateful for any donation that you can give.

"Living in Hove, I look at the Channel every day and sea swimming in all weathers is my way of switching off .

"I have been preparing for this huge endurance swim over the last 2 -3 years.

"It's a 21 mile route but tides and currents mean you swim further."

Jo added that she had, herself, covered the cost of her pilot boat and registration fees so the charities will receive all donations.

She intends to complete the distance, starting from Dover, at some point between September 14 and 18, though it is dependent on tides and weather.

In an appeal to people wishing to help, she said:

"Knowing I have your support will really help me dig deep when everything starts to hurt!"

Jo has established a fundraising page here:
