Improve Worthing Beach Access, Says Popular Petition

Over a thousand people today (August 18) are supporting a petition that's just three days old, to improve wheelchair access to the sea across Worthing Beach.

Becca Torricelli, who started the campaign, is herself a wheelchair user, and says:

"Everybody has the right to go down to the waters edge and watch the waves roll in.

"For many people in Worthing this isn’t the case; Worthing beach currently has no wheelchair accessible runway down onto the stones.

"I am a wheelchair user myself and have lived by the beach all my life, but I cannot enjoy beach days because I can’t drive onto the stones or down to the water."

The campaign calls on Worthing Borough Council and local MP Tim Loughton to support adding a runway that would offer a level and smooth surface as far as the water itself.

Becca points out the ramp would be useful to anyone with mobility issues, as it would overcome the difficulties of moving about a shingle beach.

This could include families with young children who could not use a push-chair to bring their infants to show them the water's edge.

The original petition can be viewed here.
