Investigation underway following major blaze at block of flats in Brighton

Firefighters, including a Fire Investigation Officer, remain at the scene of a major blaze at a residential block of flats in Brighton this morning (Saturday, 21). Following initial calls shortly after 8.30pm last night (Friday, 20), ten crews attended at the height of the incident in Pankhurst Avenue.

— East Sussex FRS (@EastSussexFRS) September 20, 2019 Crews said firefighters worked through the night to tackle the blaze along with assistance from emergency services, while evacuated residents were provided with temporary accommodation at a local community centre.

— East Sussex FRS (@EastSussexFRS) September 20, 2019 Southern Gas Network also cut the supply of gas to the street, affecting around 20 properties in the area for the next 48 hours. Since the incident, a go fund me page has been set up to assist affected residents, and has raised over £500 so far. A Facebook help page has also been set up. Officials said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation this morning.
