Judges Go Mild For Lewes Brew

The dark mild ale made by a brewery in Lewes has come top in its class in a prestigious national beer competition.

Harvey's Brewery's "Dark Mild" has been awarded the gold award in the Mild category of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) "Champion Beer of Britain" competition.

The CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain competition is an occasion where connoisseurs of ales can test and discover what they hope will be the finest UK brews across several categories.

Brewery staff claimed the judges noted "rich flavours, balanced profile", and the brewers' "dedication to upholding the Mild beer style".

Miles Jenner, Head Brewer at Harvey's Brewery, said:

"We are absolutely delighted and honoured that our Dark Mild has been awarded the gold in the Mild category by CAMRA.

"This award is a testament to our unwavering commitment to crafting consistent high-quality, delicious beers.

"We're excited to see the classic style gaining traction among newer drinkers, and this award further fuels our passion to keep pushing the boundaries of tradition."

Harvey's Dark Mild has been in production since 1947.

Mild ales were, reportedly, in danger of virtually disappearing from pubs and shops after a decline in popularity during the 1960s.

However, many smaller breweries have brought the style back.

Harvey's of Lewes states that its dark mild has an alcohol content of 3% by volume, and claims the brew is "malty and mellow, soft and slightly sweet with a dry, nutty aftertaste akin to an infusion of ground nuts".

CAMRA says judging for champion beers takes place over almost a year, starting with individual nominations at the outset, to local and regional competitions taking place, ahead of a day of rigorous and intensive judging at the Great British Beer Festival.
