Kemptown Carnival To Make Comeback In 2023 For 100th Anniversary

The former Kemptown Carnival will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, with a new name and new location.

The re-branded event will be held on Saturday, June 10 but organisers have not yet revealed where it will be held.

But with the new event re-branded as the Brighton Carnival, it suggests that it won't be held in Kemp Town as has been the tradition.

Back in January of this year, it was announced that the carnival would be moving to Madeira Drive for a June 2022 comeback. This didn't happen after organisers said it had was "unsustainable to produce an event worthy of its 100th year anniversary".

The carnival was cancelled in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, so the 2023 event is being marked as a major comeback following its three-year break.

It will be preceded by fundraising events as well as spotlighting local talent both before, after and during the main event.

Organisers said:

"With a new date comes a renewed energy and focus to achieve one of the clear aims for greater inclusion and diversity for all local Brighton communities including students.

"Re-branding to Brighton Carnival helps achieve new goals for a wider inclusion for the whole city, whilst keeping the strong ties with local businesses in the Kemptown area."

They've reiterated the strong focus on community that was embedded into the carnival back when it started in 1921, saying that they plan to maintain that focus and highlight local artists, music and culture as well as creating strong new partnerships with local businesses.

Registrations for artists, volunteers and businesses will open shortly.
