Lancing Residents Endure Further Disruption As Water Pipe Bursts - Again

Residents of the West Beach estate are having to deal with further disruptions in their area as work to reline the main wastewater pipe resulted in yet another burst yesterday (Aug 2).

It follows several bursts over the past year, which have left residents with raw sewage covering their street - the most recent just last month.

At the time, Southern Water said the 2km stretch of pipe had now burst in three different places but hadn't been replaced as it runs directly under the road in and out of the West Beach estate.

They say this is the reason why "lining is a better, quicker, and less disruptive option than digging up and replacing the pipeline in full".

However, work being carried out (since July 18) to reline pipes to help prevent more bursts, has now resulted in a further burst - which Southern water says is not uncommon while pipes are being worked on, and they had tankers and sand bags on hand to help reduce the affect on residents.

A spokesperson from Southern Water said:

"We have been working to re-line the inside of our wastewater main in West Way, Lancing, since 18 July 2022. This work follows a succession of bursts on the aging pipe, which has been damaged by the impact of saltwater. During this work a small burst occurred in the early hours on 2 August.

"It is not uncommon for bursts to happen during works, and we were prepared. Tankers and sandbags were onsite, allowing us to control the burst quickly and reduce the effect on nearby residents. The clean-up was done that same morning.

"We have been communicating with customers in the lead up to, and during, the works and would like to thank them for their ongoing patience and understanding. We are sorry for the disruption caused to road users in the area."

The latest burst has caused major disruption to traffic on the A259.

Sewage from the privately maintained estate is removed by Southern Water, however, the surface water drainage system is not.

Residents received a letter/email around June 29 confirming start of works mid-July.
