Large Industrial Unit Fire Sends Smoke Across Newhaven Harbour

Firefighters are responding to a large fire at an industrial unit near Newhaven Harbour this morning (Saturday).

Reports suggest that the fire, on Beach Road, was first reported just before 9.30am.

Smoke can be seen billowing from the scene for miles around.

12 fire engines from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service are currently battling the blaze.

No injuries have been reported so far.

Lewes District Council has released a statement, a spokesperson said:         

     "Council officers are ready to support the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and will respond as required. 

"Members of the public should avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed if they live in Newhaven."

UPDATED 12.07:

Eyewitness reports suggest that the fire, which has severely damaged the industrial unit, has largely been controlled.

The large plume of black smoke has subsided.

Reports suggest that the building has largely collapsed internally.

An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said:

"The operation by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service continues at Newhaven.

"We were called at 9.32 on 8 August 2020 to reports of a fire at an industrial unit on Beach Road.

"As of 11.30, 12 fire engines are being supported by water carriers and aerial appliances.

"Crews are working hard to tackle the fire.

"There are no reports of injuries and the building has been evacuated.

2Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke.

"It is too early to say what caused the fire."

Sussex Police are among the other agencies supporting at the scene and in the local area.

 

UPDATED 12.32:

Lewes District Council has announced it is to set up a 'rest centre'.

A spokesperson said:

"Council officers are setting up a rest centre at the Hillcrest Centre on Bay Vue Road in Newhaven in case it is required.

"The area should be avoided and residents living in or around Newhaven must keep doors and windows closed."
