Lewes Bonfire Procession, Fireworks Cancelled With Restrictions To Train Services

A multi-agency group has met to discuss public safety in Lewes on November 5th.

They also received an update from Sussex Police about a number of events over the weekend where there were significant breaches of the current Covid-19 rules in Brighton, including youth disorder and large-scale illegal gatherings.

The group, which included officials from the emergency services and public health, took the decision to keep train restrictions in place due to the risk of visitors still choosing to come to the town and exposing the local community to an increased risk of Covid-19.

As a result, there will be no trains calling at Lewes, Glynde and Southease after 17.00 on 5 November 2020. The last train to call at Cooksbridge is the 16.24 Victoria departure which arrives at 17:21.

A report from Monday's (November 2) meeting also reiterated that there will not be any public bonfire sites, processions or public firework displays in Lewes and all pubs and restaurants are expected to be closed.

It's in line with the government's new lockdown restrictions, which come into force on Thursday following the prime minister's announcement on Saturday:

•    Requiring people to stay at home, except for specific purposes.

•    Preventing gathering with people you do not live with, except for specific purposes.

•    Closing certain businesses and venues.

It was reported that the decision was not taken lightly but reflects how important all members of the group believe it is to protect the local communities from the threat of Covid-19.
