Lifeguards returning to Eastbourne after a rise in beach visitors as lockdown eases

Lifeguards are to return to Eastbourne's beaches after a rise in the number of visitors due to the warm weather and easing of lockdown restrictions.

The decision has been made by Eastbourne Borough Council, with adaptations to operations being made following advice from Public Health England, UK Search and Rescue and Resucitation Council (UK), to ensure safety for staff.

Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Tourism and Enterprise, Councillor Margaret Bannister said:

"Given the fantastic weather that Eastbourne has seen in recent days, increasing numbers of people are heading out for a swim in the sea as part of their daily exercise.

With this great weather forecast to continue, ensuring the safety of swimmers is paramount and being able to bring our fantastic team of lifeguards back on duty means the residents of Eastbourne can rest assured that they are being taken care of.

Whilst the lifeguard service is resuming, we would like to encourage the public to remain vigilant of the tides and conditions whenever they are entering or swimming in the sea."

All Eastbourne Lifeguard staff will receive additional training including the set-up, pack-down and general day-to-day running of the service as well as emergency responses and providing the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required.

Beachgoers are asked to continue observing social distancing measures, maintaining a 2-metre distance from anyone not part of their household at all times.
