On Thursday morning (June 17), the centre of Petworth was closed after a truck, of the kind used to transport livestock, collided with scaffolding.

Firefighters said they were alerted at 6.22am.

Witnesses at the scene show it happened in Market Square though, by 9am, much of the town centre including New Street had been closed to allow recovery.

One fire and rescue crew from Midhurst attended, along with officers from Sussex Police.

According to West Sussex Fire and Rescue, a joint operation with the RSPCA was also taking place "to support the welfare of animals in transport".

By 11.07am, emergency services reported the scaffolding had been removed, and the truck was able to continue toward its destination, though a road closure remained in place until 11.45am

The truck appeared to be registered overseas, and bears the livery of André Faselt, an international freight forwarding company based in northern Germany.

At 11.45am, the road was completely re-opened, though minor works connected with the scaffolding continued at the site.
