Lorry driver found nearly three times the drink-drive limit at Sussex ferry port is jailed

A lorry driver has been jailed after being found almost three times the drink-drive limit at Newhaven Ferry Port. Ion Cladoveanu, 50, of no fixed address, drove a 44-tonne vehicle to the port's freight control point around 8.45am on Saturday morning (November, 23). Police said a Border Force official alerted officers after suspecting he may be under the influence, as he smelt of alcohol, and had slurred speech and glazed eyes. Cladoveanu then provided a roadside breath test, which revealed he had 96mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system. The legal limit is 35mcg. He was then arrested and taken into custody, where he refused to provide a second sample. At Brighton Magistrates' Court on Monday (November, 25), he was jailed for 12 weeks and banned from driving for three years after pleading guilty to failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis.   More Radio is continuously dedicated to providing a quality news service on-air and online, reporting local stories that matter across Sussex.
