In what police described as a "vicious" attack, two men have reportedly bottled a victim in his 40s who was walking through Brighton in the early hours of the morning.

The assault occurred at about 1am on Saturday 31 July, when the 44-year-old pedestrian, who was with a friend, had left St. James Street near the Co-Op.

Officers said each of two men then struck him in the face with a broken bottle, after using a whole bottle to attack him.

The victim was also kicked in the chest, which made him fall to the ground.

He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital for treatment and was discharged later the same night.

The man he was with was not hurt, and nothing was reported to have been stolen.

The two attackers, who are believed to have been with at least one other man, then left, walking along Margaret Street.

Detective Inspector James Meanwell said:

"The motive for this vicious though isolated attack has not been established and we are currently investigating to establish the full circumstances.

"Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact the police either online or by calling 101, quoting serial 83 of 31/07."

Reports are also accepted anonymously by the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
