Man Dies After Cuckmere Haven Incident

A man has died after an incident at Cuckmere Haven on Sunday.

The Coastguard helicopter was joined by teams from Newhaven and Birling Gap to reports of two people getting into difficulty in the water.

One casualty managed to self-recover.

The second was recovered by a coastguard swimmer before being taken by air to Eastbourne hospital - where he later died.

A spokesperson for Police said:

'Police responded to a report of a man being pulled from the water by Coastguard after getting into difficulty in Cuckmere Haven at 2pm on Sunday (15 November).

'The man was airlifted to hospital where sadly it was confirmed that he had died.

'The matter is not being treated as suspicious and has been referred to the Coroner's Officer.'

A spokesperson for Coastguard said:

'At 1.11pm on 15th November, Newhaven and Birling Gap Coastguard Rescue Teams, the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lydd, Newhaven RNLI ALB and the South East Ambulance Service were tasked to a report of two people in the water at Cuckmere Haven Beach, Seaford.

'One casualty self-recovered and the second casualty was recovered from the water by the Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Team swimmer, before being taken by the helicopter to Eastbourne Hospital.'
