Man Fined £7,000 For Breaking Quarantine Rules To Smoke

A man has been handed a £7,000 fine after repeatedly leaving his quarantine hotel room to smoke despite his wife testing positive for Covid.

Umer Draz, from Slough, was ordered to isolate in a room at the Leonardo Hotel near Heathrow with his wife and children after they flew in from Pakistan in April last year, the Evening Standard reported.

But hotel staff called the police after accusing him of refusing to stay in the room in order to go outside and smoke cigarettes.

PC Danielle Scott told Westminster magistrates court she confronted Draz about his behaviour when she arrived at the hotel.

She said:

"I explained over at least a 20-minute period how important it was to self-isolate and how he was putting everyone at risk by leaving the room to smoke and entertain his young children."

Mr Draz was convicted of a breach of the Covid travel rules, at a time when Pakistan was on the UK's red list, and issued with a fine of £7,000 plus £290 in costs and fees.
