A total of three police vehicles were damaged during an incident involving a 4x4 near Pulborough at around 1.50am (Wednesday).
Police said they were called to a report of a vehicle deliberately driving through a gate and into a field at a farm on the B2138 off the A29, between Bury and Coldwaltham.
As officers arrived the 4x4 emerged from a field and deliberately collided with a police vehicle.
According to officers, a man got out of the 4x4, got into another vehicle which appeared at the scene, and was driven off.
Two of the police vehicles had punctured tyres from impact and debris on the road, and the third also had some minor body damage.
Enquiries continue to trace the vehicle which drove off, and three men believed to have been in it.
One officer reported minor injury but did not need hospital treatment.
