Man Found Guilty Of Sexual Offences After Trial

A man faces sentencing after a jury found him guilty of historic sexual offences committed against a young girl in Sussex.

Paul Latham stood trial at Hove Crown Court, and denied three counts of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15. He also denied a further count of rape to an adult.

But on November 18, the jury found him guilty of two counts of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a girl 13 to 15, with another remaining live on file. For the count of rape, Latham was found not guilty.

The 65-year-old now faces sentencing next year.

The court heard how the first offences were committed against the victim in 2005 at addresses in Hove and Woodingdean.

Latham, then aged 47, knew his victim was underage, but engaged in sexual activity with her.

Later, in 2014, he raped the victim at an address in Peacehaven.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Lisa Hampson said the victim received support from specially-trained officers when she made her report in 2018.

The officer said:

“Latham is a predatory sex offender who preyed on a young teenage girl and has now faced justice.

“The victim in this case showed extraordinary bravery and tenacity. She has remained determined through a very difficult period."

Latham, unemployed, of Wicklands Avenue, Saltdean, faces sentencing on the January 6, 2023.
