Man jailed after attacking two people and stealing milk and chicken wings

A man has been jailed after he carried out two unprovoked attacks in Worthing, as well as stealing milk and chicken wings worth £5.30 in total. Alex Gilbertson, 42, of no fixed address, punched a man in the ribs on Sunday afternoon (October, 13) in Clifton Road after leaning on the victim's van, before making off on a bicycle. Police said a couple of hours later, he entered the Co-Op in Ham Road, and stole milk and chicken wings. When a member of staff confronted him, he head-butted him, before making off on the bike, according to officers. Police said Gilbertson was then detained with help from a members of the public nearby, who spotted he was being chased by police and kicked his bike, causing him to fall to the ground. He was sentenced to 24 weeks in prison and ordered to pay £75 compensation to each of his victims after admitting to theft and two counts of assault by beating. A Sussex Police spokesperson said: "We’d like to thank the community for their patience and understanding as we dealt with this incident, which involved a number of officers pursuing the defendant on a bike. "We’d also like to thank the member of the public whose quick-thinking actions helped us to detain this man and bring him to justice."
