The man charged with the murder of a married couple at a house in Lewes Road, Newhaven on Friday will appear at Brighton Magistrates' today.

Officers were called to the property shortly after 7pm on Friday 9 June, where the bodies of 33-year-old Josh Bashford and 30-year-old Chloe Bashford were discovered.

Derek Martin, also known as Derek Glenn, 64, of Moulsecoomb Way, Brighton, was arrested in connection with the incident and has since been charged with two counts of murder.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court today (Mionday, June 12).

The families of Josh and Chloe have since released this photograph of the couple and expressed they do not wish to add any further information at this time.

Police are urging the press and public to respect their right to privacy.

Detective Chief Inspector Kimball Edey, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said:

“We are in the early stages of this fast-moving investigation, following a tragic incident in which two people have sadly lost their lives.

“A suspect was swiftly taken into custody and at this stage we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this matter.

“I understand this will be alarming to the community and there will be an increased police presence in the area for some time.

“Our thoughts remain with the families of the two victims at this extremely difficult time.

“I’d like to thank the public for their understanding and remind them not to speculate or comment on anything which could jeopardise our investigation in the meantime.”

A post mortem is scheduled to take place this week.

Police say they will not be releasing any further details in the meantime.

Part of Newhaven Cemetery was cordoned off while police carried out their investigation:
