A man who carried out a spate of house burglaries in Worthing last year has been sentenced to five years in prison. Billy Hall, 45, of King Edward Avenue, Worthing, was sentenced following his conviction of ten offences, including burglary and fraud. Police said the offences were carried out during May and June last year. Officers were called to a property, occupied by an 83-year-old woman, in Sea Lane, Ferring, on May 16 after items were stolen from inside the property. Police said the victim was gardening while the offence took place, and when she returned inside she noticed bank cards, jewellery and a small notepad with her bank card PIN details were missing. A total of £500 was withdrawn from the victim’s bank accounts, according to officers. Eight more burglaries, or attempted burglaries, then took place over the coming weeks. Hall was eventually caught out when police connected CCTV footage, DNA evidence and a footprint from a number of separate burglaries in the town. DC Chris Merryfield-Day said: “We welcome the result from court for the sentencing of Hall. "He preyed on vulnerable elderly victims and would often enter the properties when the occupants were at home during the evening or asleep. “I must commemorate the courageousness of each of the victims in their support for our investigation and hope it goes some way to providing them with closure.”
