Man who sprayed corrosive fluid in victim's face in Bexhill is jailed

A man, who sprayed a corrosive fluid in the face of his victim in Bexhill as he was trying to rob him, leaving him with facial injuries, has been jailed for over five years. Matthew Wojcik, 19, of no fixed address, carried out the attack in March this year when he saw his victim, who was known to him, at a cashpoint in Devonshire Road. Police said as the victim walked away, Wojcik followed, calling out his name in nearby Mitten Road. Officers said the victim stopped and the pair engaged in brief conversation, before Wojcik demanded he hand over cash. It was at this point he sprayed the victim in the face with a corrosive fluid. The victim ran away but suffered facial injuries as a result of the incident, according to the force. Wojcik was sentenced to five years and six months in prison for applying a corrosive fluid with intent, and three years for attempting to commit a robbery, which will run concurrently. DC David Brown said: "This was a serious but isolated incident for the area, and the defendant and the victim in this case were known to each other. "Local residents do not have to be concerned about a wider threat to the community."
