It emerged on Sunday afternoon (February 14) that the body of a man was found in the flat in Eastbourne that caught fire in the early hours that morning.

Police reported they were investigating the incident at the property in Seaside Road, where neighbours raised the alarm at 2.07am.

The fire was confined to the flat and the occupants of neighbouring flats were safely evacuated.

The death of the man, who police were working to identify, is currently being treated as unexplained.

Officers were asking anyone who saw anything suspicious in or round Cloister Court in Seaside Road last night or up till 2am today, or who has any other information, to contact the police.

On Sunday afternoon, the investigation was at an early stage and officers said they were working to understand the circumstances around the death.

At the height of the flames, firefighters from Eastbourne, Bexhill, Hastings, Pevensey, Herstmonceux, Hailsham and Seaford were present.

The borough council said this morning it's accommodated everyone affected.

The authority has also promised to support to those who need it, in the days to come.
