Memorial gathering planned for murdered woman from Lewes

A community in Lewes is set to unite in grief on Sunday (November, 17) over the murder of a local woman whose body was found in a bin on Wednesday 13 November. Sussex Police have launched an investigation after a dog-walker made the discovery near a recreation ground in the Landport area of the town at lunchtime that day. Officers said they believe the remains of Nicola Stevenson, who lived nearby, may have been there since November 1. On Saturday evening, Rev. Jules Middleton, a member of the clergy team at Lewes's Trinity, said a gathering and silence in memory of the 39 year-old victim was being planned at Landport Recreation Ground for Sunday, 17 November, beginning at 2pm. Rev. Middleton told readers of social media: "I know many of us are shocked and deeply saddened at the death of Nicola Stevenson in such awful circumstances. "In time I am sure there will be a funeral/memorial and a chance to celebrate her life, but in the immediate term it feels like many of us, especially those living in the immediate area, need an opportunity to express our sadness and pay our respects to her. "With this in mind a few of us will be gathering at the rec tomorrow (Sunday) at 2pm to lay flowers, light candles, and hold a moment of silence to honour her. "Anyone who would like to do so is welcome to join us. "I should say, whilst I have spoken to some locals, I have not been able to contact her family and this is not a formal memorial, simply an opportunity to express our sadness at her death. "We will gather from 2pm and at 2.30 we’ll hold a moment of silence. "If anyone who knew her would like to say a few words please do come along or let me know." In connection with the investigation into Nicola Stevenson's death, two men, both of no fixed address, were arrested on Thursday (November 14), both on suspicion of murder.
