Emergency services were called to Newhaven yesterday (Tuesday) after a man got into difficulty at sea.
Police and coastguard teams were joined by the coastguard helicopter and an RNLI lifeboat to carry out an extensive search of the sea and coastline around Newhaven Fort.
They were reacting after receiving a call from the man in question, who was on board a boat taking on water and unable to get ashore.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police said:
"Enquiries to locate the man have been taking place since we received the call.
"Nothing has been found and the search was called off on Tuesday afternoon."
The man has now been listed as a missing person.
